May I ask a personal question? Has prayer become a heavy burden? Do you sometimes feel like you don’t know what to pray or if it’s even making a difference?
We’ve all been there: Circumstances overwhelm your vision and waves of emotion make you question if you’re praying the right prayers or asking for the right things. You know you should pray — you want to pray — but how to pray has become fuzzy. Prayer is a heavy load when you slip into believing it all depends on you.#Prayer is a heavy load when you feel it all depends on you. #emptynest #empowerednester Click To Tweet
Our Creator never intended for prayer to be a burden.
Then Jesus said,
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT
Jesus knows He carries the lion’s share of the load, but He asks for our partnership, that we may receive the treasures of walking in faith, love, and humility. He allows us the joy of agreeing with Him and watching as He does the impossible.
The problem comes when you lose sight of the joy of relationship with God in the midst of your circumstances. Relationship is key to effective prayer. I can have my own ideas about how God should move or fix something. You can labor to get Him to agree with your assumptions and evaluation. But in the end, every perfect solution is found in listening to the whispers of the One who knows all and is perfectly good, wise, and powerful.Relationship is key to effective #prayer. #empowerednester Click To Tweet
With this in mind, I’d like to offer you a tool to help learn how to align your prayers with God. Pray Forward, my newest book, brings prayer back to the simplicity of agreement. Agreement with God’s faithfulness, wisdom, mercy, and power, and your place as His dearly loved child.
Agreement with God removes the yoke of your own effort and opens the door for His Spirit to do the impossible. Agreement with God invites Him to change your heart and circumstances from the inside out, producing humility and trust. Agreement with God is the most effective, powerful way you can pray.
As my mentor and friend, Brian Harrison, states in the Foreword:
When the Church learns that the main purpose of prayer is not to get things from God but to align with Him so He can release all that’s in His heart, it will signal a great advance for the Kingdom of God.”
Prayer is meant to be a joy, even when it comes with tears. How? Because prayer is meant to be a holy exchange. In prayer, you exchange your weakness for His strength. You trade your questions for His peace. You give God your doubt and receive His truth. And in this exchange, you will see the goodness and power of God released in your world.
I’ve watched for the last three years as these simple, short prayers have proven to be anything but simple. They’ve changed mindsets and realigned thought processes. They’ve reminded readers of unwavering truth in the midst of life’s storms, transforming heavy and hopeless hearts.
These simple prayers lift burdens and release the joy of living in union with God.
