“Every house is built and furnished by someone,
but the Builder of all things
and the Furnisher
[of the entire equipment of all things]
Hebrews 3:4 AMP
Building a home excites me.
From wish lists to the smell of cut lumber to filling kitchen cupboards, I enjoy every stage of construction. It speaks of new beginnings, fresh vision, and team work. Matt and I have built two homes in the last 24 years. Both took all of our time, energy, and resources. Both drew us to physical and emotional limits, yet fed a need to create. Through long nights and tired muscles, cracked fingers and eating peanut butter and bread for days, we treasured both the process and the end result.
As I read Hebrews 3:4 (above), I smile thinking of God this way:
God – the Builder.
God – the Furnisher.
What passion must flow from divine depths as vision takes form. As destiny and reality meet. I can imagine the fire singing in His eyes even as a grin graces His lips. Bringing parts and pieces together from around the globe. Building what no man could think or imagine.
Look around. Not with physical eyes only, but spiritual.
- What is the great Builder building in you?
- In those around you?
- In your family, community, and nation?
- How is He furnishing these humble, glorious homes with Himself and heaven?
Can you hear the hammers and chisels at work? Can you see the siding going up and the windows being set? God is building His Church, His Bride, His dwelling place, His Kingdom. The process may press you to your limits. It may stretch your thinking and stamina. It may bring up questions you hadn’t thought of and reveal steps you didn’t foresee. But know this: You are not a mistake or afterthought. When the Creator of the universe builds and furnishes, He does it with all the love and wisdom of the ages.
You — His Church, His Bride, His dwelling place — you are masterfully designed, precisely engineered, and perfectly fashioned. You are beautiful!
Embrace the season, with all of its long nights and worn knees. It’s worth it!
O afflicted one, storm-tossed, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in antimony, and your foundations I will lay in sapphires. Moreover, I will make your battlements of rubies, and your gates of crystal, and your entire wall of precious stones.” Isaiah 54:11-12
