We’ve all had dreams out of season. Or skills, but no time to pursue them. Or character traits we just couldn’t embrace. We usually end up sweeping it all under the rug and moving on. But what if the empty nest season is just the crack in the pavement these hidden seeds have been waiting for to break through in your life?
What if a whole new world lies right under the surface of your present circumstances, waiting for light to shine and a little rain to fall?
Too often culture tells us time is our enemy. We are bombarded with the message that the longer we wait, the older we get, the less chance we’ll have to fulfill our dreams or be who we want to be. While we all have a set amount of days and shouldn’t take any of them for granted, I believe some treasures are held over just for this season. Solomon reminds us in Ecclesiastes 3:1 —
For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.
While walking in a high meadow, I took a dirt road that once led to a power station. Several years ago the old station was torn down, a new station built, and the unused road left to fill in with grass. At one point I glanced down to see a flower pushing its way through the old dirt track. In the not so distant past, it would have been crushed and killed. But time and change made way for it to flourish today. Some treasures are held over just for this season. #emptynest Click To Tweet
We have seasons of life where we burn a path to certain activities: running to school events or soccer games or dance recitals. We practically live in our car. Or what about the path between the fridge and the stove, or into the laundry room? You’ve put a lot of miles on those roads.
But today, not so much. It doesn’t take as long to fix meals or get the house in order. You haven’t driven to the school since graduation and you hardly need groceries, it seems. Some days are long and quiet. But where old routines have been laid aside, new joy, curiosity, and courage wait to fill their place.Time and change make way for hidden seeds to flourish. #emptynest Click To Tweet
Think for a minute: What has been waiting under a hard surface of your to-do list that now has room to spring up? Perhaps a relationship left unattended or still undiscovered. Maybe a dream to teach or travel or open a restaurant. Digging even deeper, maybe there are seeds of courage, gentleness, patience, or love just waiting to burst forth. Perhaps this season we coin the empty nest is the perfect environment for these endeavors to bloom.
You have a choice. You can keep traveling down the old paths, even in your thoughts, and hinder a new life from growing. Or you can build new power stations and new roads and allow new beauty to break through in unexpected places. Take a chance. Break out of the routine. Who knows what’s around the corner.
Let all that I am praise the Lord…
He fills my life with good things.
My youth is renewed like the eagles.
I’d love to hear some of the seeds that are springing up in your path today!
- What’s one dream you had at 21 that still lingers?
- What’s one thing you can get rid of to make room for something new?
- Where’s one place you’d like to visit within 50 miles of home?
- Who can you reconnect with today?
